Advent: Cornerstone

December 5, 2017

The Lord has punished me severely,
but he did not give me over to death. Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord;
the righteous shall enter through it.
I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.
The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
This is the Lord’s doing;
it is marvellous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118:18-24

therefore thus says the Lord God,
See, I am laying in Zion a foundation stone,
a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation:
‘One who trusts will not panic.’

Isaiah 28:16

Day 5

Two Old Testament readings today and a promise of what is to come.

A ‘cornerstone’ is coming; the foundation which keeps everything else upright. ‘A sure foundation.’

From out of Zion will come the root core of all Christian faith.
