During the last two school years, the COVID-19 waves hit in the spring. Online teaching in the spring had its own challenges, but the transition was easier because I already knew my students and had already taught most of the year’s content. This year, the prospect of starting the school year online has new challenges. How can I get to know a new class of students? How can I introduce new content?

For the next two weeks, I will give you a glimpse into the beginning of my online school year. Today is my first day of school, so I wanted to use today to introduce where I am going. Next Tuesday, I will tell you about the activities I did to get to know my students and build a classroom community. The following Tuesday, I will discuss best practices for introducing new material online.
When my school went online in March 2020, we were in one of the first waves of school closures, so very few teachers had any resources available for online teaching. Now, more than a year later, tons of resources are available for teachers in any stage of online learning with any age group. I am excited to add my experiences to the mix, but I am also grateful for the teachers who have already experienced starting the year online that I can learn from.
